Russian airliner crashes in Egypt’s Sinai, all 224 aboard ‘killed’
A Russian charter plane carrying 224 people crashed in a mountainous part of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula Saturday, killing all on board, Egyptian officials said.
The Islamic State (IS) group affiliate in Egypt claimed that it downed the plane, without saying how, but there has been no official word on the cause of the crash. The plane with 214 Russian and three Ukranian passengers, and seven crew, had taken off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in the south Sinai bound for Saint Petersburg. It lost contact with air traffic control 23 minutes later.
Egyptian security and medical officials said there were no survivors, and that the bodies of the passengers and debris were spread out over an area of five square kilometres (two square miles).
The Russian embassy in Cairo said: “Unfortunately, all passengers of Kogalymavia flight 9268 Sharm el-Sheikh-Saint Petersburg have died. We issue condolences to family and friends.”
The wreckage was found roughly 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of the North Sinai town of El-Arish, Egyptian officials said.
The IS affiliate, which is waging a deadly insurgency in the Sinai, claimed that “the soldiers of the caliphate succeeded in bringing down a Russian plane” there.
It said this was in revenge for Russian air strikes against militants in Syria, where IS controls territories that straddle Iraq.
Three military experts said IS in Sinai does not have surface-to-air missiles capable of hitting a plane at high altitude.
But they could not exclude the possibility of a bomb on board or a surface-to-air missile strike if the plane had descended for an emergency landing.
The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered Moscow’s emergency ministry to dispatch rescue teams to Egypt.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and his French counterpart Francois Hollande said they had sent their condolences to Moscow.
The Russian emergency ministry published a list of names of the passengers, ranging in age from a 10-month-old girl to a 77-year-old woman.
A senior Egyptian aviation official said the plane was a charter flight operated by a Russian firm, and was flying at an altitude of 30,000 feet when communication was lost.
At Saint Petersburg’s Pulkovo airport, anxious family members awaited news of their loved ones.
“I am meeting my parents,” said 25-year-old woman, Ella Smirnova, seemingly in shock. “I spoke to them last on the phone when they were already on the plane, and then I heard the news.”
“I will keep hoping until the end that they are alive, but perhaps I will never see them again.”
A senior Egyptian air traffic control official said the pilot told him in their last communication that he was having trouble with the radio system.
Russian aviation official Sergei Izvolsky told Interfax news agency that the Airbus 321 operated by Russian carrier Kogalymavia had departed Sharm el-Sheikh at 5:51 am (0351 GMT).
He said the plane did not make contact as expected with air traffic controllers in Cyprus.
– Communication lost –
“Communication was lost today with the Airbus 321 of Kogalymavia which was carrying out flight 9268 from Sharm el-Sheikh to Saint Petersburg,” Izvolsky told Russian television networks.
“The plane departed Sharm el-Sheikh with 217 passengers and seven crew members. At 7:14 Moscow time the crew was scheduled to make contact with… Larnaca (Cyprus). However, this did not happen and the plane disappeared from the radar screens.”
Kogalymavia, which operates under the name Metrojet, says it has two A320 planes and seven A321s, and that it transported 779,626 passengers in the first nine months of 2015, according to the Russian aviation agency Rosaviatsia.
Russia has a dismal air safety record, with charter operators often under pressure to book to capacity on ageing jets in a bid to cut costs.
Kogalymavia is a small regional carrier that flies mostly international charter services.
No representative of the airline could be found at the airport in Saint Petersburg and nobody at the company was answering the phones.
Russia’s regional airlines are notorious, and the crash is likely to raise renewed concerns about the safety of air travel in a country where experts have sounded the alarm over the ageing fleet of passenger jets.
The last major airliner crash in Egypt happened in 2004, when a Flash Airlines Boeing 737 plunged into the Red Sea after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh.
The 148 people on board, most of whom were French, were killed.
Millions of tourists, many of them Russian, visit the resort, one of Egypt’s major attractions for holidaymakers looking for pristine beaches and scuba diving.
It and other resorts dotting the Red Sea coast are heavily secured by the military and police, as an Islamist militant insurgency rages in the north of the peninsula, which borders Israel and the Gaza Strip.
Militants in the north who pledged allegiance to the jihadist Islamic State group have killed hundreds of soldiers and policemen since the army ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
Court jails oil thieves for 84yrs
Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos yesterday convicted seven men to 84 years imprisonment for illegal and unlawful dealing in 1,459 metric tonnes of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol. The court sentenced each of the convicts to a jail term of 12 years each commencing Friday after the Judge found them guilty of the five count charge preferred against them.
The convicts are; Adedamola Ogungbayi; Olaniran Olabode; Suraju Gasali; Moses Emmanuel; Wilson Bonsi; Okaraodi Uche and Onyeogo Happy. Apart from the jail term, Justice Abang also ordered the forfeiture of the vessel, ‘MT Good Success’, used by the convicts in stealing the said petroleum product, as well as the recovered petroleum product to the Federal Government.
The judge also ordered the forfeiture of the sums of N66.6m and $975,000 belonging to the convicts’ company, Hepa Global Energy Limited, domiciled with the First City Monument Bank to the Federal Government. To ensure a compliance to his judgement, Abang ordered the filing of an affidavit of compliance with the order within 21 days of the judgement.
The convicts, were arraigned alongside their vessel and company on August 28, 2014 on five counts alongside one Padoun Jacob, who was discharged and acquitted by the court. The judge, in setting Jacob free on all the five counts, described him as a desperate job seeker, who became a victim of circumstances.
The judge noted that the stolen petroleum product had been loaded before Jacob was employed by Hepa Global Energy Limited on February 7, 2014.
CBN refuses to devalue Naira, plans PAVE
By Adekunle Aliyu & Levinus NwabughioguABUJA – Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Goodwin Emefiele has restated that the CBN will not devalue the Naira anytime soon to revive the falling economy.
He said that the Bank has had to depreciate the currency from N155 to N197 in February, recalling that even President Mohammdu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had also re-echoed the position of the CBN.
Emefiele however stated that the CBN would soon launch a policy called PAVE meaning “Produce locally, add value and export your product and earn your foreign exchange for your imports” to help local industries.
He spoke to State House Correspondents after a meeting on the economy with the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo at the presidential villa on Friday.
He said: “There has been a lot of talk on whether or not we want to depreciate our currency again.
The truth is that we had adjusted the currency by depreciating it from N155 to N197 in February this year. There is no intention to depreciate or adjust the currency any longer.
“The President has been very clear on this. The Vice President has been very clear on this and let me further reiterate our position at the Central Bank of Nigeria that we are not considering any further depreciation of the currency.
“What we are trying to concentrate on right now is how to improve and deepen the foreign exchange market by improving supply of foreign exchange into the market.
And to do so, we are trying to encourage people to export and earn your export proceeds and use your export proceeds to import whatever you need to import.
We are also concentrating on how to reduce the import of items that we can produce in the country today.
“So that is our focus. I’m saying and very soon the CBN will be launching a campaign called PAVE, which means “Produce locally, add value and export your product and earn your foreign exchange for your imports’’ because this is the only way we can support the efforts of CBN in intervening and providing foreign exchange in the market to meet the import needs of our people.
“It is very clear, what we need to do is reduce our propensity to import but we will not depreciate our currency. For now we will not.”
The governor also revealed that the CBN was working a list to exclude a number of items from foreign exchange market.
“First of all, the CBN does not have the power to ban the import of any item.
What we have done is to exclude certain items that are imported into the country from obtaining foreign exchange from the Nigerian foreign exchange market.
“Yes, it is also true we held a stakeholders’ meeting with the organized private sector and prominent and leading private sector stakeholder were at that meeting.
“It was not meant for the press. The purpose of that meeting was to engage the private sector to make the private sector understand that government realizes that they are engine of growth and we also used the opportunity to explain to them the basis and purpose of those policies that we have introduced and at the end of that meeting they were very happy, they saw our position and indeed at the end of that meeting some of them in fact provided us with the names of some items that should be included in the list that should be excluded from foreign exchange.
“And I must confess that at this stage given the determination of some of the organized sectors to say that yes, they produce these items and that we should exclude those items from foreign exchange.
We are reviewing that list and we may in due course include more items products that can be produced in Nigeria in the list of items that will be excluded from foreign exchange in the Nigerian foreign exchange market”, he said.
Meanwhile he Naira on Friday depreciated further at the parallel market amidst intense regulation of the activities of operators of the Bureau de Change (BDCs) by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The currency lost N0.5 to the dollar as it exchanged for N226.5, as against its previous value of N226.
The official exchange rate at the interbank window remained at N197 to the dollar.
Traders at the parallel market attributed the recent depreciation of the naira to the apex banks further tightening of the conditions of operation of the BDCs, making more people to access forex at the parallel market.
They said that the CBN now required operators of the BDCs to show the name of the person/company buying forex, his Bank Verification Number (BVN) and his ticket, if he was travelling. )
I couldn’t confess to my best friend I slept with his wife!
I’VE often warned against tempting fate. When you have a relationship and are getting on fairly comfortably with your partner, it’s almost fatal to the relationship to bring in a third party to live with you under any guise. That is why, no matter how repulsive we find it, male domestics continue to dip into the same pots as their masters and male partners throw caution to the wind and pant after the maids!
When Musibau came back from the US years back, the first person he got in touch with was Gboye, his friend of several years. I’d known them together even before they travelled abroad and when Musibau called that Gboye was throwing a welcome party for him, I gladly attended. Gboye’s wife, Rita, and the mother of their three children, was the perfect hostess, she seemed to get on with Musibau, who she hadn’t met until his return.
When I asked Musibau what his plans were and where he was staying, Gboye cut in: “The silly man went to stay in the family home until his wife joins him with their children. I’ve told him it was a silly thing to do. The place is a bit dilapidated and crowded. First thing tomorrow, I’m moving him into the guest room. It would be a temporary arrangement. His wife is expected in a couple of months, and, until she arrives, he has a home with us.”
Rita beamed her approval and, when I cornered Musibau later on and asked him of the rationale behind his moving in with a married couple, he saw no problems at all. “You don’t understand,” he tried to assure me, “Gboye is not only my best mate, he’s like a blood brother. We went back a long way and we’d shared a lot of things in the past. We even lived together once with our girlfriends. No problem at all,” I shrugged. Who was I to put a spanner in any works? Musibau eventually moved in, and I’d seen him with his hosts at parties and they seemed to get on well.
Too well, if you’d asked me. When next I saw Musibau, it was at one of these fancy malls on the Island and he looked as if he was dying for a chat. “Why did you warn me against living with Gboye at my welcome party?”, he asked. Well, why did he want to know now? “I think Rita has the hots for me!” he said, not at all bragging. “My friend has turned into a home body but Rita is the swinging type.
Whenever Gboye refuses to go on an outing with her, she suggests taking me and Gboye instantly agrees. A couple of weeks ago, I was watching the TV late in the night when she joined me on the sofa. She couldn’t sleep, she said, and when the film got really steamy, she placed her hand on my thigh. ‘Do you like me at all?’ she asked. ‘Gboye is my best friend’, I reminded her. She simply got up, said good night with a full kiss on my lips!
I gulped but she’d disappeared to the bedroom. From then on, she gave me knowing looks, even when her husband was around. I became nervous. Rita is an extremely pretty woman but I have my pick of female friends. Only I dare not bring them home because of my friend—he’s a married man after all. I can’t wait for my wife to come back in a month’s time—she’ll save me from making a fool of myself. I shook my head sadly.
Trying to stop a scheming woman, I warned, was like trying to stop a charging vehicle with one hand. My warning came too late. I’d heard Musibau ‘s wife was back and I heaved a sigh of relief. At least, now, Rita would check her randy libido. “She’d already seduced me by the time my wife arrived”, Musibau told me sadly weeks later when he came visiting. “You’re the only one I can confide in.
“My Waterloo came the day Gboye had to travel to Abuja officially for a couple of weeks. As soon as he left, Rita virtually lunged at me. That night, she kissed me full on the lips again and I responded. She’d sent too much signal for me to remember any friendship that existed between Gboye and I. Soon we were at it, brushing the sheets off their bed. She felt really triumphant and for the next two weeks, she couldn’t keep her hands off me. I felt guilty, of course.
Luckily, when Gboye came back, we acted normal and he didn’t suspect a thing. Having gotten away with it, we grew more adventurous. We’d even had sex up against the sitting room door while Gboye slept. That way, if he tried to come in, we’d know about it first.
“But my wife smelt a rat as soon as she came back with our son. She hated Rita on sight and pointed to the fact that she was too familiar with me. She immediately arranged for us to move in with her parents. I’d earlier turned up my nose at living with my in-laws, but she threatened to tell Gboye if I refused to come with her. To be frank, I was enjoying the attention of two women but I love my wife too much to jeopardize my marriage.
So, we left our hosts and I had some peace of mind. When we eventually found a four-bedroom flat and had a house-warming, Rita brought bowls of food that my wife wanted to dump in the bin. I had to plead with her not to because of Musibau, the innocent one out of the nightmare. I thought I’d seen the end of my affair with Rita until the day she called and I told her my wife was with her parents because her aunt died.
“I was shocked to discover her at my door minutes after her phone call. When I let her in, puzzled, she started clawing at me, wanting sex. That was when I told her enough was enough. That I couldn’t make love to her in my own home with photos of my family staring at me from all corners of the room. She did not understand at all. If I could make love to her in her matrimonial home, why couldn’t we do the same in mine? I told her to beat it. She was so furious I was apprehensive she might do something rash.
“ A few days later, I was relaxing with a bottle of beer in front of the TV when my mobile bleeped a message: ‘Is it true you’re sleeping with Rita?’ It was from Gboye. I was still deciding on what to say when he drove up— we live a few minute’s drive from each other. He looked really ragged as he came in. ‘How could you?’, he howled, ‘my best friend?, after all I did for you?’
“He plunked himself on the nearest chair, his head in his hand and he was sobbing. I’d never seen him this unhappy before. Of course, I denied everything. Who did he think I was to sleep with a friend who’d meant so much to me? Did he realize that even my wife suspected the same thing and insisted we should all stop being so friendly.
Where did he hear of such nonsense? He then showed me a message on his mobile. I went cold as I read it:”If your wife hasn’t told you she’s sleeping with your best friend, then you ought to know: the sender had no name. A mischief maker? My wife”? Relieved that it wasn’t Rita that went confessing to her husband,’ I told him to forget the message. Had he confronted Rita? I asked him.
He said he had. That Rita was so indignant she insisted he came to me for reassurance. She even wanted to come with her husband to show how innocent she was but Gboye declined. “Phew! To be let off the hook that easily. Gboye told me he loved his wife and children and wouldn’t want his home to break. I assured him I would be the last person to do so. Didn’t I also have a family I cared so much about?
That sort of convinced him and I offered him a drink. I was hoping he would refuse. The state he was in, I didn’t want my wife to meet him in the house. But, he took up my offer. When my wife came in, she went to the kitchen and I pleaded with Gboye not to complicate things by telling her, that we must salvage what was left of the friendship we shared, and, to my relief, he agreed.
“If only I’d listened to you when you warned me I shouldn’t stay with Gboye. You know, even now when we run into each other, Rita still smirks? That girl is shameless. All I know now is that she’s a nymphomaniac. If it wasn’t me. It would be the next man. Only heavens know who she’s currently luring into her loins…”

Liverpool beats Chelsea
Liverpool beats Chelsea
The Blues have endured a torrid start to the season – winning just three times – and headed into the game with questions persisting over Mourinho’s future, though Ramires opened the scoring with a fourth minute header.
The Reds hit back, however, with Coutinho curling a brilliant effort past Asmir Begovic from the edge of the box to level the scores prior to half-time.
Coutinho then grabbed his second in the 74th minute, his effort deflecting off John Terry, before Christian Benteke completed the scoring with a low finish from just inside the box 10 minutes later.

Couple who met online on an ESPN website get married
Despite the similarities, Kate and Brandon never knew each other before meeting in the comment section and becoming known as the “Blog Couple” to all the other commenters out there.
According to ESPN, Kate tells them that Brandon was the only one to not accuse her of being “a middle-aged man in a basement somewhere.”
“If she was a middle-aged man, she was a middle-aged man who could make me laugh all the time,” Brandon admits. “I figured I’d take my chances.”
They talked online for about six months before Brandon hopped in his car and drove 12 hours from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Wilmington, North Carolina to see her. His friend, Tom Brady (not the football star), joked that Brandon drove all that way because he was “anxious to find out if she was indeed a middle-aged man” or not.
Kate opened her door to find Brandon visibly shaking on her doorstep from the nerves, but it was a “very cute” shaking as Kate describes it.
“Definitely worth it,” he remembers.Things moved very quickly for Brandon and Kate. After meeting in person for the first time, they made it a point to visit every three or four weeks over the summer. They both admit that they realized their relationship was the real deal very early on, which is why Brandon found a job in North Carolina that “was good for his career.”
Although his brother, Ryan, will tell you that Brandon really took the job to be closer to Kate.
“It was love at first type,” as Kate’s friend describes it.From there, the rest is, well, a win. On October 24, 2015, Kate and Brandon married. They carefully chose a date when Michigan’s football team would have a bye week.
They call their love story the best there ever was, but what’s really great about it is that Brandon and Kate “genuinely bring out the best in one another.”

MY LIFE IN CAMPUS (Episode 8)
Continuation Of EPISODE 8
“What have I done?” I angrily asked myself. “Why? Why? Banji why?”
I guarded up again like a man that I am. I stood up. Grace, I will beat you and the dog that has been riding on you since morning, I said to myself. I rushed inside the room like a wrestler into a ring. Oops! They both are still having evening exercise after all that has happened to me. They are both under the blanket, ignorant about my presence. I was so prepared for Emeka. I was ready to fight. I took my shirt off and rolled my trouser to my knee. I frowned like a boy that misplaced his lunch fee. I held the edge of the blanket and hauled it to reveal their miserable faces. Emeka turned around almost immediately and grasp me. I quickly landed a blow on his face that landed him on the bed. He stood up swiftly like a soldier and striked his, I weaved it. I kicked, not intending to hit his stomach but did. He fell on the floor and I took opportunity of that. I sat on him. He struggled. I struggled. She was so scared of all the drama we performed, she took to her heels.
“Grace, I am coming for you oooo!” I shouted as she was running out of the room. “Slut!”
I dragged my focus back to helpless Emeka. I punched him again on the face. He immediately started begging; punch atimes is a good therapy for madness. I stood off him and quickly ran after Grace.
I cared less about what people would think of me dressed like I was. I looked really like a psycho. My singlet was soaked but not obvious because it’s quite dark, 7:45pm. I halted my race and thought of where I could locate Grace. Alas! It was the fellowship’s bible study day. I thought to check her there because she won’t like to miss it, her position won’t warrant. I was purposely silencing the still small voice telling me to retreat. She has cost me alot already and I can’t let her go just like that, I assured myself. I ignited my running engine again because the bible study was closing by 8:30pm. What a day, I lost alot today, I kept saying while running. I finally got to the fellowship. I quickly rolled down my trouser before entering. I had this ‘I don’t trust you too’ look on my face when the female usher was leading me to a seat. As a matter of fact, I don’t trust anyone again; not after what Sister Grace did. I patiently sat down listening to the almost ending sermon:
“No matter what anyone does to you, try and forgive. God won’t forgive you if you don’t forgive your fellow man.” Brother Samuel preached.
I shrugged off all he was saying. If you are in my shoes, I swear you won’t preach that nonsense, I muttered. The fellow that sat beside me, almost immediately looked at me disgustingly. I wondered if he heard what I said or was pissed with the way I was dressed; singlet and trouser on sandal.
“If you are here and you won’t forgive, then am sorry to say, God won’t forgive you.” Brother Samuel preached on.
Now Brother Samuel was getting the worst out of me by that statement. I felt that Sister Grace has reported me to him and he was purposely directing the sermon to me. My brain was already over heating. I was so vexed to the extent of reading it all over my face. Thank goodness, the sermon ended.
“We call on the bible study secetary to please come out and share the grace for us.” Brother Samuel obliged.
Now this is where they called for trouble, Grace should share the grace? I was not going to allow her do that not after gracing Emeka’s graceless bed. She boldly strolled out of the congregation not noticing my presence.
“May the grace of the Lord Jes—s-ss” She was saying.
“Hey! Please!” I interrupted aloud raising my hand.
Everybody impulsively gazed at me like a celebrity. Sister Grace was bolted from the blue when she saw me. They all wondered what I wanted to say.
“Ehm--- Ehmm-- Ehmm” I stuttered.
TO BE CONTINUED...
