How To Merge Windows Partition

How to Merge C and D Drives in Windows 8 with Ease

Question: there are 5 partitions in total on my old 500GB hard disk. Now drive C (system partition) is full though it was allocated with 80GB space while partition D is filled with free space. Therefore, I want to combine them. How can i merge drive C and D

Answer: there are several ways to combine 2 partitions, and here we just introduce 2 of them. One is using Windows 8 built-in disk management tool, and the other is using third party partition manager.

How To Merge C and D Drive using  windows 8 Disk Management

Though Windows 8 built-in disk management tool does not provide a function to combine 2 partitions directly, users can get the same effect by taking the following operations. Firstly, backup all important data on drive D to other partitions or external device. Then, open disk management by performing these operations: right click "Computer" icon on traditional desktop, choose "Manage", and select the item "Disk Management" in the left. Next, right click drive D and choose "Delete Volume" from the shortcut menu. Then, click "Yes" to start deleting. After successful deletion, partition D will be unallocated. At this time, right click drive C, choose "Extend Volume", and perform the remaining operations according to given wizards. Note: "Extend Volume" may be grayed out under some situations. At last, move the backup to drive C.

2. Select any partition and choose "merge partition" to get this window:

3. Select the partition which will be expanded namely drive C and click "Next"

4. Choose the partition that will be included to the first selected drive namely drive D and click "Finish" to go back to the main interface:
5. Click "Apply" to apply merging, and after successful application the problem how to merge C and D drives will be solved.

Note: combing 2 partitions with MiniTool Partition Wizard requires NTFS partitions. If users operate a FAT drive, they will receive an error. Fortunately, the feature "Convert FAT to NTFS" in Partition Wizard can well solve the very problem. Moreover, partitions that will be merged should be neighboring.
