London - A couple residing in London has received a six year prison sentence after it was found that they had enslaved a Nigerian immigrant for 24 years, Punch reports.
The accused, Emmanuel and Antan Edet, had on November 17 been found guilty on charges of child cruelty, slavery and assisting in illegal immigration.
The couple, a medical doctor and nurse respectively, were handed down their sentence on Monday after evidence had been presented to the Harrow Crown Court in London.
It was found that the victim, identified as Ofonime Sunday Inuk, moved to Londo in 1989 under the auspice that the couple would sponsor his education and remunerate him for working for them.
The couple allegedly forced Inuk to work long hours without pay. He also received no education, was isolated from his family and subsequently threatened with deportation if he attempted to escape the couple's home.
The victim, now 40 years old, was also forced to eat alone and allegedly slept on the floor in the hall of the couple's home.
Damaris Lakin, a prosecutor, has described the cruelty shown by the couple as disdainful and a total violation of the victim's freedom.
